Hyderabad: Talk about a classical music performance with hundreds of performers, many in the music circles might immediately ring notable vocalist Pratima Sasidhar’s number. Well, all credits to a large number of learned musicians from her music school ‘Saraswati Sangeeta’ – who have been able to perform any kinds of devotional or classical songs within a week’s time.
However, coming this far was surely a tough task for Pratima. With a keen interest to learn music, Pratima had moved to Tirupati from Anantapur to learn music. Despite losing her family in a train accident and being married at an early age, Pratima continued pursuing her interest in music majorly under Dr Neeta Chandrasekhar, a professor at Telugu University.
Soon after, she saw the need to spread her knowledge on classical music and thus had started her own music and dance school – ‘Saraswati Sangeeta’ and ‘Nritya Sikshanalaya’ at Mehdipatnam in 2002.
Currently, there are around 600 students learning music – vocals, violin, veena, keyboard, guitar and dance from the institute. “I have also been associated with the University of Silicon Andhra in California for the past three years. We have around 200 students from there as well. During the pandemic, we had started an Online Music Academy which has also received a great response, shares Pratima who along with her students has also performed at the opening of Statue of Equality in the city.
This Women’s Day, on March 8, Pratima, along with her students is set to perform Daasara Padagalu to pay her tributes to Purandara Dasa at Shilparamam. “Like how Annamacharya is famous here, Purandara Dasa is very famous in Karnataka. Thus, I wanted to introduce his works to audiences here as well, Pratima shares.
The hour-long performance will also have the anchor Mahidhar Sharma translate a few verses for the Telugu audiences. The event called ‘Women’s Day 2022 – a Musical Treat By Women’ – jointly presented by Hope Advertising Private Limited and South Indian Cultural Association will see several cultural artistes performing from 9.30 am to 9.00 pm on March 8 at the Ethnic Hall in Shilparamam, Hyderabad.
