Biswabandhu Sen, a BJP MLA, was elected as the Speaker of the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Friday. He received 32 votes out of a 60-member house. In the election, which began at 11 AM, he defeated Gopal Chandra Roy, a Congress MLA who only received 14 votes. Sen is a four-time MLA from Dharmanagar in North Tripura district and was even the deputy speaker in the previous assembly.
The ruling BJP-IPFT alliance holds 33 of the 60 seats, while the opposition – comprising TMP, the CPI(M), and the Congress – holds the remaining 27 seats.
The TMP, with 13 seats in the assembly, abstained from voting in the Speaker’s election. Expressing displeasure against the seating arrangement in the house, the 13 members staged a walk-out right before the election began.
Earlier, the TMP had promised to support Roy, who was the joint candidate of CPI(M) and Congress. Sources state that TMP’s decision to abstain from voting came after Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s call to the TMP supremo Pradyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barman.
