97% parents of underprivileged children in rural India want schools to reopen, finds survey #IndiaNEWS
A survey conducted in 15 states and Union Territories in August has shown that 97% parents of underprivileged children in rural India want schools to reopen as soon as possible.Schools were closed in March last year when the coronavirus pandemic triggered an abrupt nationwide lockdown. Some states have resumed in-person classes for secondary students as the second wave of Covid-19 abated, but there is no clarity on when younger children will be able to return to their classrooms.A report based on the survey of nearly 1,400 schoolchildren showed the devastating impact of online education in underprivileged households. The report has been prepared by economists Jean Dreze and Reetika Khera, researcher Vipul Paikra along with nearly 100 volunteers. “The results of a simple reading test are particularly alarming: nearly half of all children in the sample were unable to read more than a few words,� the report said. “Most parents feel that their child’s reading and writing abilities have gone down during the lockout.
