Tamil Nadu Assembly passes resolution against Citizenship Amendment Act #IndiaNEWS
The Tamil Nadu Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act, India Today reported. Chief Minister MK Stalin said that the law was discriminatory as it had no provisions for Sri Lankan Tamil refugees to get Indian citizenship. The Citizenship Amendment Act, approved by Parliament on December 11, 2019, provides citizenship to refugees from six minority religious communities from Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, on the condition that they have lived in India for six years and entered the country by December 31, 2014. The Act has been widely criticised for excluding Muslims. It sparked massive protests across the country. “[The law] is also not conducive to the communal harmony that prevails in India,â€? the resolution stated, according to the Hindustan Times. “As per established democratic principles, a country should be governed taking into consideration the aspirations and concerns of the people belonging to all sections of the society. â€? While tabling the resolution in the Assembly, Stalin also questioned how race and religion could be obstacles for granting citizenship. ஄+ªKx+«¸+© x+«¸(®
