Mysore/Mysuru: Doctors at Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, Mysuru, have given a new lease of life to a 27-year-old pregnant mother and her newborn infant.

Sowmya (name changed), a resident of T.Narasipur taluk, had come to the Hospital with Amenorrhoea, breathing difficulty and swelling of the feet since 10 days.  The doctors, who examined the patient, diagnosed her with Pulmonary Edema and admitted her to Coronary Care Unit (CCU) under Senior Interventional Cardiologist Dr. N.S. Rajendra on Oct. 2.

She was managed in the CCU for the day with inputs from Consultant Obstetrician Laproscopic and Infertility Specialist Dr. Savitha Rathod Naik and Senior Cardiac Surgeon and Clinical Director Dr. M.N. Ravi. She was diagnosed with Valvular Heart Disease Severe Mitral Stenosis and Regurgitation. Since she was suffering from Pulmonary Edema (waterlogged lungs and heart failure), she was counselled for emergency Caesarean Section because of prematurity and poor survival chances of the baby. Caesarean surgery was performed on Oct. 3 by Dr. Savitha Rathod Naik and the woman delivered a live baby weighing one kilogram.

The mother was once again managed in the CCU and following respiratory failure, she got intubated and was put on a ventilator. As she was unstable even on a ventilator with cardiogenic shock, respiratory failure and kidney dysfunction, the woman’s family members were counselled for emergency open-heart surgery as a life-saving procedure.

On Oct. 4, the woman underwent an open heart surgery and mitral valve replacement procedure. Over the next 24 to 48 hours, the woman recovered dramatically and the ventilator was removed on the 2nd post-operative day. She made a fast recovery after the surgery, continued ICU management and was discharged from the Hospital after a week.

Following Emergency LSCS, the child had respiratory distress for which the baby was intubated and resuscitated at OT and then shifted to NICU under the care of Senior Paediatrician and  Neonatologist Dr. Maneesh S. Giri.

The baby was put on ventilator in the NICU, where it was managed with all the support it needed since the baby was pre-term. The ventilator was removed after 16 days. The baby is on oxygen support and is making good progress at NICU.
