Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal on Sunday wrote to President Ram Nath Kovind requesting him to take back the Padma Shree, India’s fourth-highest civilian award, given to actor Kangana Ranaut. The 34-year-old actor was awarded the Padma Shree on Monday.Maliwal made the request in relation to Ranaut’s recent comment that India attained freedom in 2014 and what the country got in 1947 was charity.“It wasn’t azaadi [freedom] but bheek [alms], and the freedom came in 2014,�? she had said on Wednesday at the Times Now Summit.Ranaut’s comment was an apparent reference to the year in which the Bharatiya Janata Party was elected to power.
