City woman loses Rs 15.40 lakh to fraudsters #IndiaNEWS #Metro
Bhubaneswar: Unknown fraudsters including a New Delhi-based foreigner have duped a woman from the Capital city here of more than Rs 15 lakh on the pretext of doubling her investments and by threatening her to make viral her ‘objectionable’ videos.
The Commissionerate Police has started investigations into the matter after registering a case based on the complaint lodged by the victim lady at Khandagiri police station.
As per sources, the victim had recently received a friend request on the social media site Facebook which she accepted. The friendship was cemented as both sides shared their mobile numbers.
To trap the lady by winning her trust, the fraudsters later deposited some money in her account without her permission. One of the fraudsters allegedly told the victim that he wanted to start real estate business in Odisha with her help.
Subsequently, the accused along with four of his aides including the foreigner reached Bhubaneswar. The accused introduced the foreigner as James Alia Brigton, a native of UK, who owns Trimurti Courier Services in South Delhi.
The person who was in talks with the victim told the latter that Brigton was engaged in construction work in India and that he has four hotel projects in progress in Puri.
The victim was told that if she was ready to invest Rs 5 lakh, she would get double the amount of her investments.
Lured by the offer, the victim failed to make out their motive and gave `15.40 lakh to the accused by taking loan and selling her ornaments. They even cleverly took her signature in a blank paper and took away the pin code of debit and credit cards.
A few days later, an unknown person informed the lady over phone that the accused person had links with human traffickers in Pakistan and Bangladesh and used to supply girls from various parts of the country to the above countries for sex trade.
Accused Brigton even threatened to make viral her objectionable videos or kill her if she does not pay them the money and inform the police about the fraud. The victim also switched off her cellphone fearing criminal acts by the accused.
