Keyhole Surgeries, one of the most definitive path-breaking treatments for brain tumours now available in India #IndiaNEWS #Health
With advancements in neurosurgery, it is now possible to perform minimally invasive or keyhole surgeries for excision of the brain tumour and to give a new lease of life to the patient. These surgeries use an endoscope to access and remove the tumours located in the brain. They are also referred to as neuroendoscopy or minimally invasive brain surgery. These surgeries remove the tumours through the nose, ear or an incision near the eye.
Initially, the neurosurgeons used the endoscopic approach to reach the pituitary gland through the nasal passage. And with further progress, they have been able to reach tumors through various access points such as corners of the eye, crease of the eyebrows, behind the ear using the endoscope.
The size of the hole in these surgeries is equal to the size of a small coin through which the surgeon inserts the endoscope and other instruments required in the surgery. The focus of the keyhole surgery is to gain access to the internal organs of the body through its natural corridors.
In India, the increasing incidence of brain tumour patients raises the need for offering suitable neurosurgical treatment, especially keyhole surgeries or minimally invasive surgeries as they are also known.
Dr. Gurneet Singh Sawhney, a leading neurosurgeon in Mumbai and Senior Consultant and HOD of Neurosurgery, Fortis Hospital, Mumbai, states, Today, advancements in neurosurgery have made it possible to access areas of the brain which were impossible to access earlier through keyhole surgeries and enable the neurosurgeon to remove tumours in the brain and skull areas safely. An expert neurosurgeon performing these surgeries will try for minimal or nearly zero collateral damage to the surrounding brain, blood vessels, nerves and scalp; hence, they are considered relatively safe.
Currently, neurosurgeons are treating increasing number of patients with brain tumours, both malignant and benign. And for such conditions, surgery is one of the most relied upon options to treat the tumour, whether benign or malignant and/or high or low grade, especially if the neurosurgeon is confident of removing the whole tumour. However, the patient will require chemotherapy and/or radiation if the surgeon cannot remove the entire tumour.
The neurosurgeons prefer the keyhole surgery procedure as it is minimally invasive, which implies that the surgery is performed through small incisions as against conventional open surgeries, which are performed by making larger incisions.
Yet another advantage of the keyhole surgery approach is that the neurosurgeon can focus entirely on the surgical site during surgery with real-time video imaging that enables comprehensive viewing of the surgical site.
